Dream Works - Can a Legendary Surrealist Garden in Mexico Bloom Again?
Dream Works - Can a Legendary Surrealist Garden in Mexico Bloom Again?

By William Middleton, New York Times, March 28, 2008

Las Pozas seems like a myth, a kind of rain-forest mirage. The Surrealist sculpture garden was built more than four decades ago by the eccentric English artist Edward James 2,000 feet into the mountains of the Mexican jungle. It encompasses more than 80 acres of natural waterfalls and pools interlaced with towering Surrealist sculptures in concrete, including "Bamboo Palace," a three-story structure with walls that look like shoots of bamboo; "Stairway to the Sky," a Piranesi-like staircase that soars up several stories and ends in thin air; and "Homage to Max Ernst," an outdoor aviary that is a forest of concrete columns. Las Pozas is near the village of Xilitla, a four-hour drive southwest of the nearest sizable airport, in Tampico, and seven hours north of Mexico City."""

In a hilly patch of dense jungle in East-Central Mexico, steps zigzag up to a ten-foot cement totem-pole shaped like an orchid carpel. Below the totem, a stand of bamboo is, upon closer inspection, a cluster of cement wands. A mortar leaf balances delicately on its stem inside a clover arch like a giant ornament for a cake, or a crown. Buttresses trace butterfly wings.

The famously eccentric James – known for boiling his paper clips in eau de cologne for fear of germs – moved to Mexico in the late 1930s to escape judgemental English high society after the collapse of his marriage to the dancer Tilly Losch.
